DOE Science Showcase - Oil Shale Research
Oil shale has been recognized as a potentially valuable U.S. energy resource for a century. Obstacles to its use have included the expense of current shale-oil production technologies and their effects on our environment. The energy landscape is evolving. Technology has advanced, global economic, political, and market conditions have changed and the regulatory landscape has matured. Recent efforts to realize the potential of this vast resource is a major focus of DOE’s Fossil Energy program research. Read more about recent developments in fuel extraction, water management and efforts to advance the use of oil shales for energy In the OSTI Collections: Oil Shales, by Dr. William Watson, Physicist, OSTI staff.
