IEW is a joint initiative of the US Departments of Stateand Education, and is part of the federal government’s efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States. Science and technology have been and will continue to be engines of US economic growth and national security. Excellence in discovery and innovation in science and engineering and in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education will strengthen the US economy, increase the capacity of US research and sustain our nation’s leadership role in increasingly competitive international science. The Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) is the Department of Energy (DOE) office that collects, preserves and disseminates DOE-sponsored R&D results that are outcomes of R&D projects or other funded activities at DOE labs and facilities nationwide and grantees at universities and other institutions. OSTI believes that accelerating the sharing of scientific knowledge accelerates the advancement of science. OSTI ensures global access to DOE research results and brings the world’s research to DOE. DOE Connects with Higher Education Communityby Karen Spence 16 Sep, 2010 in Science Communications When you think of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), what do you think of? The national laboratories? DOE’s leadership role in reliable, clean and affordable energy? Scientific discovery and innovation? Nuclear security? DOE has a role in all of these things, and more. Now, do you think about DOE’s connection with higher education? Probably not, but we want to change that. EDUconnections is a year old project, and through it we celebrate our university partners, spotlighting a different higher education institution every month. DOE supports a diverse portfolio of research at colleges, universities, research facilities and institutions across the nation. Big science and interdisciplinary teams are balanced with investments in research projects. DOE also supports graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and almost half of the Department’s Office of Science's research funding goes each year to support research at more than 300 colleges, universities and research institutions nationwide. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) connects with university research departments and libraries across the nation to increase awareness of DOE's valuable scientific and technical information. Since 1947 OSTI's mission has been to advance science and sustain technological creativity by making research and development findings available to Department of Energy researchers, the American public and internationally. OSTI Connects with Universities Nationwideby Linda McBrearty 22 Oct, 2009 in Products and Content One of OSTI’s founding missions is to support education. From the early 1960s when OSTI provided educational materials on the atom and published the booklet called “Understanding the Atom” we have been committed to education. While information in OSTI databases can be used by teachers, students and parents for Kindergarten through High School, many of the technical documents and research findings are better suited for university studies. OSTI’s databases contain thousands of university research projects that were either funded by DOE or sponsored through partnerships. Who needs this higher-level information? University students, professors and librarians need ready access to this information to advance scientific discovery! OSTI’s goal is to provide all of this information in an easily accessible, organized, online format that is available at no cost. And we’ve done just that! Now OSTI is focusing on how we can help communicate better and ensure that the DOE laboratory research communities have immediate access to these priceless resources. We’re working hard to connect with research universities across the nation to let them know about these great resources.
To that end, OSTI has connected with the education community via a new webpage launched September 1, 2009. Our new webpage, .EDUconnections, identifies core universities and academic organizations that contribute to DOE research laboratories. You will see on our “spotlight” page how their cutting-edge research solves real world problems through DOE-sponsored programs. This, in turn, helps propel our future workforce to new discoveries in engineering, mathematics and a wide variety of technical disciplines.
