Science.gov Makes Further Advancesby Valerie Allen 03 Dec, 2010 in Products and Content Have you noticed that navigating through Science.gov is faster than before? We completed a major software upgrade the week prior to Thanksgiving in which highly technical improvements were made to the site. While many of the improvements are “behind the scenes” some you might notice are:
The Federal Register (FR) and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) are now automatically searched through the main search page; they can be individually searched through the advanced search page. But wait, there’s more! A Science.gov widget is now available to add to your site. By doing so, you and your users will be able to easily search 45 authoritative federal databases and over 2000 science websites with one search and without navigating away from your website. Consider downloading and installing the Science.gov widget to provide access to 200 million pages of additional science information in a convenient way. This is a great tool for libraries and academic institutions! Related Topics: alerts, CFR, Code of Federal Regulations, Federal Register, FR, Science.gov, widgets Read more... |
OSTI Connects with Universities Nationwideby Linda McBrearty 22 Oct, 2009 in Products and Content One of OSTI’s founding missions is to support education. From the early 1960s when OSTI provided educational materials on the atom and published the booklet called “Understanding the Atom” we have been committed to education. While information in OSTI databases can be used by teachers, students and parents for Kindergarten through High School, many of the technical documents and research findings are better suited for university studies. OSTI’s databases contain thousands of university research projects that were either funded by DOE or sponsored through partnerships. Who needs this higher-level information? University students, professors and librarians need ready access to this information to advance scientific discovery! OSTI’s goal is to provide all of this information in an easily accessible, organized, online format that is available at no cost. And we’ve done just that! Now OSTI is focusing on how we can help communicate better and ensure that the DOE laboratory research communities have immediate access to these priceless resources. We’re working hard to connect with research universities across the nation to let them know about these great resources.
To that end, OSTI has connected with the education community via a new webpage launched September 1, 2009. Our new webpage, .EDUconnections, identifies core universities and academic organizations that contribute to DOE research laboratories. You will see on our “spotlight” page how their cutting-edge research solves real world problems through DOE-sponsored programs. This, in turn, helps propel our future workforce to new discoveries in engineering, mathematics and a wide variety of technical disciplines. Links are provided to the “spotlight” university or institution showing exciting new research, professors of note, and activities within their research community. Dynamically OSTI--Web 2.0 -- Enabling Information-Enabling Users-Enabling Accelerationby Erin Dominick Anderson 19 Jun, 2009 in Products and Content Fluidity is about being flexible, variable, graceful and agile. OSTI as an organization is fluid. We are listening to the scientist, the researcher, the educator, the librarian, and the science attentive citizen. What do they need? What do they want? How can scientific and technical information reach them when and how they desire it? How can we make their work better, faster and easier? This OSTI agility means that switching gears midstream and going with the Web 2.0 flow to meet the needs and expectations of the public, is something just our speed. The Wikipedia definition of Web 2.0 states that "[i]t is characterized as facilitating communication, information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration on the World Wide Web." Web 2.0. Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0 (retrieved June 4, 2009). What better fit to the OSTI Corollary "speeding the sharing of knowledge will accelerate the advancement of science"than the techniques and technology of Web 2.0?
To speed the sharing of knowledge, OSTI is facilitating communication through blogging, audio, podcast, and video sharing. We are also engaged in information sharing via widgets, alert systems, RSS, XML and OAI services. These tools compliment a variety of our scientific and technical information products, such as DOE R&D Accomplishments and DOepatents... Science, Knowledge, Experience, and the Facebook-Wayby Erin Dominick Anderson 18 Dec, 2008 in Products and Content OSTI Experiences Facebook--Part One
The Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has achieved another milestone in our mission of accelerating the diffusion of knowledge to advance science. Albert Einstein once said that "[t]he only source of knowledge is experience." What better way for OSTI to advance science and accelerate the diffusion of knowledge than by joining the Web 2.0 world of social networking. So, come increase your own knowledge and experience the OSTI Page on Facebook.
Why a Facebook Page for OSTI?
